Knee Pain

Knee Pain Summary

Knee pain is bothersome, it limits your movement. Most knee problems resolve on their own but sometimes you need to try NSAIDs, rest, or more advanced measures such as laser therapy. Occasionally you will need a knee arthroscopy, which is a simple outpatient procedure. In advanced cases of osteoarthritis, you need a total knee replacement, which is major surgery but usually very well tolerated. Breakdown of common knee problems:
  • Knee ligament injuries such as the ACL, anterior cruciate ligament. Occasionally surgery is needed but start with conservative measures such as rest and laser therapy.
  • Cartilage tears, like the medial meniscus, may require surgery.
  • Arthritis is one of the most common problems, and the most common reason for total knee replacement. Start with conservative therapies, NSAIDs as tolerated, and laser therapy. Rheumatoids can have knee problems but less commonly.
  • Trauma. Start with conservative therapies, NSAIDs as tolerated, and laser therapy.
